What makes the main character / narrator of Second Shot a voice that readers will relate to?:

Roy L. Pickering Jr. My main character wants what we all do. To love and be loved. To be forgiven for transgressions. To be viewed as a better person than his lowest moments indicate. To forget what he is most ashamed of but knowing that this is impossible. To be thought of, when remembered, with tenderness. Decide for yourself whether to like him or not. Either way, he was written with intent to be understood.

Was it difficult to transition from writing fiction for adults to writing a children's book?

Roy L. Pickering Jr. Not overly. I was a voracious reader of children's books during my daughter's early childhood in addition to the books I read for myself. When making my first attempt at writing a children's book, the biggest challenge was constantly reminding myself to confine the vocabulary to words that a child of 6 - 9 years of age would be comfortable with. Word choice is critical no matter what type of book is being written, but different types of books require different choices.

What is your newest novel Second Shot about?

Roy L. Pickering Jr. When the killing of an unarmed Black teen by a White cop doesn’t result in a conviction, a father's grief is unleashed. His podcast and foray into politics drives Tyler Bennet underground. Leaving identity, career, social circle and NYC behind, Tyler re-emerges in Chicago where he finds love and hopes for a quiet life of redemption under the name of Reggie Harris. But his past demands a reckoning.

Is there a message in your new novel MATTERS OF CONVENIENCE that you want readers to grasp?

Roy L. Pickering Jr. Among the things people base decisions on are selfishness, cowardice, familiarity, and what is easiest or most useful to them. Overcoming obstacles to be with the one your heart most strongly desires is the happy ending found in storybook romances, but reality complicates what dictates our choices.

How do you get inspired to write?

Roy L. Pickering Jr. If I knew how to turn it on or off, I'd do just that. Inspiration is like oxygen. It's just there waiting for me to breathe it in.
