Hi Joy, I absolutely loved this story.... I read The Invention of Wings (Sue Monk Kidd) last year, and I think your story added a lot to my understanding of that era! Do you remember me from the EANE newspaper in Boston? I was the assistant editor there, under Carlene Hill, in the early 1990s when you freelanced for us. What a delight to find your book in the library I now work in! I now live in Greenville, SC

Joy, This was an amazing story. I live in the Cherrydale area of Greenville, SC Not far from Furman University. In your research did you find a lot of diaries detailing the daily goings-on during the time of the attempted rebellion?
Joy Jordan-Lake Hi, Denise! I actually went to Furman, graduated in 1985, and love Greenville! What a renaissance for the city. I did find lots of archival diaries and letter for the daily goings on, as well as published works in which the authors analyzed their archival research. It was so tragic to see young white slaveholding women actually express horror at what they saw of slavery, and the rape they knew was taking place, as well as the daily cruel treatment and family separations--but then, as they grew older, to become less horrified, more accepting that this was simply how things were, more complacent and willing to simply look the other way. Now and then a line would break through in a diary, something along the lines of "if there is a Divine Judge, then we slaveholders are in very big trouble," though in 19-cen. language.

I was so inspired by this book in unexpected ways. I too am in the process of writing my dissertation (I feel that I am paying a psychological cost in doing so), I have an interest and have been gathering information to write a historical fiction story and felt encouraged by Kate's dissertation process in a backdoor way! Thanks for being committed to the journey of seeing this story through to completion?!
Joy Jordan-Lake My poor dissertation advisor must have thought I'd never finish the actual academic writing. A dissertation is a long and thankless task with no cheering section, so let me give you a shout out right here.
