When writing a first draft I do not restrict myself with chapters, or even writing the story in the correct order. If a scene won't flow I move on and write one that does.
When re-writing if I find a problem I am not sure how to solve I highlight it and move on, leaving the problem to mull in my mind until a solution presents itself- often when I'm about to fall asleep, cycling, or gardening.
