Well, of course I'd go to medieval England, and hopefully land in the nobility, occupying a comfortable, well-appointed castle (I think those only live in books, but we are talking fiction here). What would I do? I'd ride horses and learn to shoot a long bow, capture the heart of a rakish knight and set about reforming him. I suppose we'd have to join forces to right a few wrongs, too.

When I first moved into my home, I was awakened in the night by a voice calling my name. It sounded threatening, and I was afraid to open my eyes. When I finally got up the courage to look, no one (thankfully) was there. I chalked it up to a dream. A few months later on Christmas Eve, my daughter, who was about eight at the time, told me she heard a voice in the night calling her name. Assuming she'd just had a dream, I said, "Maybe it was Santa." She frowned, and said, it wasn't a nice voice." Shivers! That's my one and only paranormal experience (or maybe we were both dreaming!). Still, I think it could inspire a good book.

I would say be tenacious. Every one of us has a story to tell. Think about what intrigues you, sit down at the keyboard, and start writing. Wonderful things happen when you take this first step. Then, get with other writers, join a writer's organization or start a critique group (of very supportive members--stary clear of anyone who saps your creativity). Work on your craft so you can express on paper precisely the story that is in your head.

My next novel is a psychological drama, again about friendship. It's the story of three men: Albert Metzer, a young man driven by the memory of his overbearing and abusive father, Jerry, a shell-shocked, homeless Vietnam vet whom Albert enlists to help him steal $100 million worth of art; and Morris Goldman, a tenacious private investigator racing against the onslaught of a terminal illness to solve the most puzzling crime of his 50-year career. As you can tell, this story is a darker than my first, but it still has a lot of humor and heart.

I don't really get inspired to write. For me, that's the cart before the horse. I sit down and start writing and then the inspiration comes, as if the gods of creativity want a show of faith first.

When I saw the movie As Good As it Gets (with Jack Nicholson, Helen Hunt, and Greg Kinnear). I thought how great to see a movie about the healing power of friendship. I wanted to write a story like that, but without the romantic element, so the focus would be solely on the theme of friendship. I chose an unlikely pairing of a quirky young man's who's heart had been broken and a sweet, very proper older woman who never got back in the game after her husband died twenty years earlier. Things got pretty darned humorous when these two got together.
