I have always enjoyed American History and, like many, I have a special interest in the Civil War. There have been countless books, both fiction and nonfiction, written about that time period. I wanted to write a Civil War novel from an angle that looked more at the relationship between two very different individuals rather than the war as a whole. While driving across Nebraska to visit my friend and his family, an idea began to develop. What could have happened if a lone Confederate, and a sharpshooter at that, discovers an escaped slave? What conflicts would he have faced? Would he disobey orders? And to complicate matters even more, what if the slave was female? A Fall of Sparrows navigates all of those difficult questions, all the while creating two unique characters. It is my hope that readers will fall in love with those characters and discover a true hero worth cheering for.
