My first project in all my fiction stories is to get the characters into a situation that has no solution. It's fun for me to see how they get out alive. My latest book is a science fiction story. My original impossible situation was a farting dragon. Seriously. There's no lethal windage at all in TIME FLIES, but that's where it started. It morphed away from its original aroma, and it went from fantasy to science fiction.

I am invariably hounded by one of two sources of inspiration. (1) the need for some extra cash; or (2) the relentless gnawing of a lone plot bunny.

I don't have a pancreas, and I'm dealing with that. As I type this answer TIME FLIES still has that New Book Smell. I'm theoretically on Social Security, but that never lasts too long. I'm a binge retiree, and I seem constitutionally unable to take it easy.

I can add more words, but the answer will stay that simple. Get a job that *requires* you to produce words. One of my first careers was being a newscaster for a radio station. I had to write 3-minutes of news copy every hour... 6-hour shifts... 6-days a week. No more. No less. Writer's blocks aren't allowed. What would I even do? Get on the air and apologize for having constipation of the verbage machinery? Radio news doesn't really work like that. I would have a noticeably short career in broadcasting.

Simple: tarot. It has never failed me. Tarot cards -- the way I use them, and the way Karl Jung described them -- are a definitive archetype of an everyman play. My approach always giggles my mental doorway that keeps ideas from my conscious brain. Tarot always work this way.
