Stephen Doster Jesus Tree was inspired by the real-life murder of a pastor in my home town back in 1938. A black man was sentenced to prison for life for the crime, which he may or may not have committed. He recanted on his original testimony. Others were certainly involved in the shooting. He had no real motive as far as my research shows. In my novel, he returns to his hometown after serving 40 years to confront the real murderer, who happens to now be the richest man in town.
Stephen Doster A word. A phrase. A dream. An inspiring song or sight. Anything can set off creativity.
Stephen Doster Nothing as of this moment. I guess I'm the Ringo Starr of literature. He drums when he's got a gig. I write when I have something to write about; not to write every day just for practice.
Stephen Doster Write because it is fulfilling for you, not because it will make you rich and famous. The former will satisfy your soul. The latter will put you in a nicer house and a faster car. Not sure it will bring contentment.
Stephen Doster The best thing about being a writer is pouring yourself onto the written page and having it resonate with others.
Stephen Doster Doing some research on a subject is a writer's block-buster. Research generates more ideas than you will be able to follow up on.
