It actually wasn't going to be a book initially. I had an idea for a movie set in the middle ages and centering on a family that had been hated for over a hundred years, and the current generation struggling against what others think. As I filled in the plot, I started to develop a backstory that kept insisting on being told, thus what was going to be a movie, became three novels. I'm currently working on the second.

Hearing from someone that my work has touched them, made them laugh or cry, or feel less alone in the world.
Of course I also love those rare moments when everything comes together beautifully and it doesn't even feel like work at all. As I said, that's rare, but it is a wonderful feeling.
Holding your book in your hands is also a great feeling, and it never gets old. With each book I still get that thrill.

Write as much as you can. Try different forms, and genres, find what works for you and run with it. And read a lot!

Finishing up the first draft for "The DeFord Chronicles, Part II." After that I'll be asking my readers what they'd like me to work on next.
