John Fullerton It's all there in Spy Game, which is a fictionalised account of experiences on the Afghan-Pakistan frontier.
John Fullerton I'd go back to my boyhood love of C.S. Forester's Honrnblower series - I loved the way he handled action. Even now it's such an exciting read. And Forester's world was much simpler: French (bad), British, and especially the Royal Navy (good) and without the appalling costs of imperial expansion, class exploitation, cruelty and greed. Such a simple, good versus evil world doesn't exist and never has, but it's wonderful escapism. Who would not want to be a Hornblower, whether plucky midshipman or experienced, wise and battle scarred lord admiral?
John Fullerton Summer's over. And I don't 'list' books by the season. I have several hundred books I want to read, from history and politics to literary fiction and crime novels. At the moment I'm reading the shocking and astonishing 'The Radical Rising: The Scottish Insurrection of 1820' and it reveals my gross lack of knowledge about my country's history. The novel is shocking because it exposes the way in which the British manipulated and controlled the Scots through bribery, blackmail, murder and above all secret police who acted as provocateurs, all too successfully.
John Fullerton It wasn't an idea. It was a feeling, a sensation, an emotion, something in the gut.
John Fullerton I don't. But it helps to read a lot of good stuff and avoid the dross.
John Fullerton Another novel. It isn't crime and it isn't a thriller. It's a war novel.
John Fullerton There are people who write and people who don't. There's no such phenomenon as an 'aspiring writer'.
John Fullerton Go for a long walk.
