Actually, I've already done one. My novels After the Rising and Before the Fall are loosely based around the death of my great-uncle during the Irish Civil War of 1922. I could never find out the real-life answer to the question of how he came to be allegedly shot by a friend from the other side of the divide called "The War of the Brothers" in Ireland. So I made up a 750 story that brought in the war of the sisters too.

Perhaps. But first to understand their readership. Who is the reader? That's is the all-important question.

I've always been a follow-the-book kind of writer but the more novels I write, the better I get at doing outlines in advance. They change as they go -- but they are useful for quickly getting into the book. About half way in, the ending comes, then I'll switch and start working on that and back from there.
