Read a ton of books in your genre. Everything you can get your hands on. Write every day. Grow a thick skin if you're traditionally publishing, and no matter how you are publishing, start getting involved in the online community of writers. I would also say start a mailing list so you can let your fans know when your book is ready and when you have events.
