I go outside for a walk, hike, some kind of exercise -- anything to turn my brain away from what I'm trying to write!. I don't sit down at my laptop again until my mind is clear and I have found a renewed energy to write what I was working on. I may write something else first to help release any tension.

I love the sense of calm that comes when I've written enough to realize a truth or emotion that rings true to me or to my characters. I love when what I write makes sense to others and helps them to understand a new concept, truth or emotion that they may not have understood before. I love when I can talk with readers and hear their personal reactions and perceptions of something I've written -- how it's touched them, in positive or negative ways, as it helps me get to know that person better and gives clarity as to how my writing is interpreted. I love the English language and how words can touch others.

Follow your bliss and those of your characters! Don't fight when they want to tell their story, through your fingers, as it's the magic in writing.

I wanted to write a story where nature is as much of a character as the human characters, based on my professional career as an environmental communicator, and understanding that what we value, we act to protect. If we understand how much nature provides to us -- emotionally, physically and intellectually -- we will see that we are a part of the natural world and that its gifts are essential to our lives. The main character, Beth, experiences the loss of a natural world she treasures, and must decide how much she values it over the course of this story.
I also wanted to write a story where the characters had the best of intentions, from their individual perspectives, because I try to believe that people do want to do the right thing. Problems arise because each person may have a different sense of what that "right" thing is in intense situations.

Nature, the caring of family and friends, and a need to work through an idea or conflict to resolution always inspire me to write -- whether it's a short paragraph, an article or a full-blown story.
