Danny, sorry for the very late answer, I don't check Goodreads as often as I should and I had no email notification. First off, no, I haven't come across her. I did however teach in St Josephs the catholic school in Newport for quite some time and taught a host of McCarthy's, most of them interrelated in someway or other. Guy and Harriet Pringle in Olivia Manning's Balkan Trilogy. It is hard to say why. Perhaps the setting and context that highlights the strengths and weaknesses in their relationship.

'The Gift' was playing around with my own family history, my fascination with Evan Morgan - Lord Tredegar - Satanist and Papal official, and Aleister Crowley. Then it was a matter of seeing how these three particular balls could be made to 'play nicely' together. Its sequel grew from that.

The second book of 'The Gift'. Provisional title 'Follow the Blood'. If you like family sagas, (Liverpool slum girl makes good) aristocrats, nazis and satanists, then The Gift is the book for you! It's sequel looks promising at 62K with another 30k to go.

Write. Find a good crit group. And write. One last thing. Never submit straight from the pen. It reads too good 'in your eyes'. Put it away for a month at least then return to it. You're more likely then to see it through the eyes of a stranger and be more critical. Imperfections stand out.

Writing the stories you want to read

The trick is to recognise it. On one level I might say I ignore it. Write on. Even if it's only the mythical 200 words. What they say is true...more words follow. You can't predict. On another level there are times when I'm prone to displacement activity - like now, or doing gardening which I really hate. Now that's writer's block, but it doesn't last long and you come back guilty and renewed.
