Before I became ill, I never believed in writer's block. I hadn't experienced it.
Now, I simply do something else to get my mind back on task. It might be walking, cleaning, tossing the ball for the dog, reading, drawing, meditating, what have you. In the end, I always seem to return to the writing.

Write. Read. Walk. Sleep. Eat. Enjoy friends and family.
Repeat often.
And do not worry if you go a day or several--even a year--without writing. At a computer, tablet, typewriter, or pad of paper, I mean. Writers are always writing, even when words aren't spilling forth onto the page.

I was ill for years before Lyme disease was finally diagnosed. When I began to feel healthier, I decided to take a year and write a novel. While on my first solo retreat during the winter at Marie Joseph Spiritual Center in Biddeford Pool, Maine, I prayed and meditated on the question, "What shall I write about?" Three times I was "told" to write on Lyme. The third time was when I was in the cafeteria after hours writing in my journal and drinking a cup of hot water. I wrote, "I think I know what I need to write about, but I want to make sure" or something similar. At that exact moment, one of the nuns at the table next to mine doing a puzzle, said to another nun, "I wonder if that Lyme group will be here this year." I recall thanking my spirit guides for supplying such a concrete answer so quickly...and I apologized for being so thick that I needed to hear it yet again! :)
