Ed Kovacs Get life experience, read books about the craft, read books about the BUSINESS of writing, and write write write. Network, attend conferences or workshops. Read books. Don't be attached to an outcome, just start building a body of work.
Ed Kovacs I'm about to start on an adaptation of one of my screenplays, Promised Land, into a novel. A former undercover DEA agent, now at the end of his rope, must reinvent himself and find redemption in order to save his family and his sanity. Character-driven, but with plenty of action.
Ed Kovacs Many, many years ago, before I'd really dedicated myself COMPLETELY to the writing trade, I believed I needed some kind of inspiration. The only thing I actually need is time. If I decide to write something new, I just sit down and start. I have dozens--hundreds--of stories in my head, just waiting to be written.
Ed Kovacs I have never had writer's block! Sometimes, when I'm developing a new plot, the story will get stuck. When I realize I'm stuck, I back up and find out what I need to change in order to move it forward.

When I sit down to write, it's like flipping on the light switch. How lucky is that?
Ed Kovacs The lousy pay! Just kidding, it's really the long hours. Whoops, still kidding. If one is truly a writer, then it becomes a lifestyle. Since I was a young teen, I knew I could write well and had a desire to do so. Having the time to write is such a gift, a grace. I feel fulfilled, feel I am doing what I am supposed to be doing with my life when I write. So blessed to able able to do what I love to do.
Ed Kovacs I had met and married a beautiful, highly educated, funny, and very strong-willed Asian lady who was so opposite the stereotype of the submissive Asian female, so I wanted to put such a character into an action-thriller. So I wrote a screenplay called Asian Bride, and it almost got produced. Then, years later, I decided to turn it into a novel, but my Asian Bride morphed into a smart, strong Russian woman.
