Maria Haskins LOTS of books! I'm reading Robert Repino's fantastic 'D'Arc' right now, and I'm looking forward to reading these titles:
E. Catherine Tobler's 'The Thing In The Ice'
Alan Garner's 'The Owl Service'
Darcia Helle's 'Child's Play'
J.S. Breukelaar's 'Aletheia'
And a whole lot of other stuff, too! I want to read some more Octavia Butler, and maybe re-read 'Beowulf'.
Maria Haskins The best thing is also what is the hardest: exploring the ideas in your mind, and making them appear on paper in the way you imagined them when they were still in your head. Playing with words and ideas and story-structure in order to "paint" the tale you want to tell. It can be difficult and frustrating, but it is also a lot of fun and rewarding.
Maria Haskins I'm currently working on a science fiction novel. It's set in the same loosely constructed universe that I explore in Odin's Eye - a collection of short stories.
Maria Haskins I think the only advice is to write, write, read, read, and write some more. I know from experience how difficult it can sometimes be to find the time -especially if you have kids, and have another job in order to earn a more secure income - but even a little bit helps. For me, it works if I set aside a time for writing every day, even if it's just a short time. Inspiration is good, but hard work is what really pays off if you're writing a book.
