First, read. Read a lot and read widely both in and out of the genre in which you write. Second, write every day. Third, learn and practice your craft. Writing every day ideally means working on your project but it could mean just an email or a blog post or a thoughtfully worded comment. Life comes first. Practicing your craft means learning the rules (before you break them) and writing/rewriting/revising until you have something ready to release. That will take longer than you think. And that's okay.
