I'm currently finishing up Black Pantheons, which is my first collection of short stories. The stories are all tied together around the theme of cosmic horror, There are no benevolent saviors or guardian angels in these tales, just man pitting his wit against a vastly superior enemy, and often coming up short.
Black Pantheons should be going off to the editor in a few weeks and will be released in a few months.

I'm all about story. Don't get lost in slice of life, literary masturabation. Practice telling full stories, with beginnings, middles, and ends. Tell them from various points of view, linear as well as non. Piece together fictional diary entries and newspaper clippings ala Dracula so that it makes a full story. Write in different mediums- prose, comic scripts, flash fiction- and let your mind exercise its plotting and resolution muscles in various ways.
Once you know how to tell a story, write one that comes from the heart and that only you could tell.

I spend fifteen or twenty minutes after each writing session to think about what I'll write tomorrow. This gets my brain primed for the next scene well before it's time to sit in front of the keyboard.
