It has to be Laurel K Hamilton's Anita Blake and Jean Claude - before they embarked on a relationship. The characters had a huge chemistry built on the fact that Jean Claude was a creature of the night, while Anita had the ability to raise the dead. The invisible cord between them became less appealing once it was consolidated, and they ended up in bed!

I only get it when there's a fundamental flaw in my planning, so I go back to the plot, un-pick it, and re-write it.

I've almost always been self employed, and almost always worked in the arts, so I could say 'freedom in my working day' but that isn't just restricted to writing. To me, it's getting those weird and wonderful ideas onto paper, and watching them come alive.

There are lots of good forums out there. I've produced a 'top ten tips' in my blog (Feb 2015) but really, there's no substitute for reading and writing because it takes a long time. Keep at it.

I can't not write. Inspiration has never been a problem; controlling it into sensible, well-plotted story lines is the issue.

I'd been playing around with a grim dystopian future on and off for a while. I decided to use detective noir as the inspiration for the story. I turned a few of the original noir principles upside down by using a female narrator, and making her the opposite of a tough, gun-toting fist-fighter. I added a twist by making her Jess Green an empath, and employed elements of horror in the narrative. So it was quite a long, slow process developing both the character and the story.
