Young Chun I don't have a good answer for writer's block. I tell my students to free-write, but what I usually do is go out for a smoke or play Sudoku. It may be a complete waste of time, but it stimulates my brain and gives me a small sense of accomplishment when I'm feeling down on myself for not being able to produce any writing.
Young Chun I think the best thing about being a writer is being able to communicate with readers. I'm not the most eloquent or charismatic person in public; in fact, I'm the exact opposite--withdrawn, quiet, anti-social. Writing gives me a way to communicate with other people. When someone tells me that something I wrote made them laugh or cry, I feel like I've made a connection I'm unable to make in everyday social situations.
Young Chun The most important thing is to sit down and write, which is easy in theory and difficult in practice. I could be wrong, but I remember reading that Stephen King made it a point to sit down and write four or five hours a day. Setting aside a part of your day and making that your routine will make a big difference in how productive you are.
Young Chun I don't do anything special for inspiration. I just keep myself open to it. Inspiration will come when I'm just going about my day, doing the most random things. The inspiration for my next book came to me when I was stuck in traffic.
Young Chun I'm currently working on my first novel. My first book is a memoir, but my passion is for writing fiction. The novel is a modern re-telling of a Greek play with themes centered on the struggle with and inevitability of fate. There are other themes, but I don't want to give away the plot just yet.
