Write. Read the writings of others. Learn to develop and defend opinions. Observe people. Sketch people with words. Talk to strangers. Remember that everybody has a story and every story has somebody... find your story and let your story find you. It will. You just have to be open to it.

The best thing about being a writer is writing. I was fortunate enough to be taught the power of words, their beauty and the incredible force they can have on the emotions of others. That unexpected metaphor that changes everything the reader believes, the "totally nailed-it" explanation that makes the reader immediately connect to you - those are the best things about writing.

I have always allowed myself the pleasure of just getting up and walking away. I'm not one of those "plow through" kind of writers. The story stops when it stops and it will come back when it comes back. That is THE best thing about self-publishing and marketing your own book. Your biggest competition is yourself.
