By reading other novels, watching movies, reading historical articles, (Fun fact: Gustav Eiffel had an apartment with a lab on top of the Eiffel Tower) and when all else fails, daydreaming.

Mostly by reading several articles about historically significant objects that have been lost to time and wondering "What if someone had all of them in a box somewhere?" Once I got working on it, I started folding it into the Seekers of Truth cosmology, which led to the resulting urban fantasy kitchen sink.

It's pretty simple. Read as much as you can, and then write as much as you can. Don't worry about what people want to read. Just write whatever you think needs to exist, and someone will want to read it. If it turns out well, make it better. If it doesn't work, take it apart and keep the parts in a drawer to use for something else. And then write something else.
