I use the Scrivener software. This frees you from writing linear beginning to end and you can easily skip around in the story. Thus if you don't feel up to writing one area on a particular day you can float to the area you are wishing to write so there is no writers block to a truly creative person.

Usually the character is instrumental in giving me ideas for the book. I tend to build characters and watch them resolve problems. Often I am surprised myself.
