I'm a high school English teacher and will be teaching my students to write personal narratives using your essay about your father as an exemplar. What advice do you have for students to dig deep and write about something so intimate and personal?

Amy Schumer Thank you, I am so flattered. My advice would be: don’t try and get it right. Just try and be authentic to yourself and how your voice sounds in your head.

Was there anything that you learned about yourself while writing this book that surprised you? Is there anything you wish you had done differently?

Amy Schumer I always want to go back and make things better over and over, like a stand up set. But I am really proud of the book. I learned to listen to my own instincts. Even people in positions of power at the top don’t always know better than you.

First off your book made me laugh out loud about 400 times. You are hilarious. Ok but my questions are..did your dad read the book? If so, what are his favorite or least favorite parts of it?

Amy Schumer Thank you! My dad didn’t read the whole book, but I read him the parts about him. He loved it! He cried during the part about us bodysurfing in the ocean together.

Amy Schumer I hear you! There is nothing that can fix that shit other than time. Long walks. Music. Having your best friends on call. Call them all the time and let them make you feel better.

Hi Amy, I teach 11th grade English in Vermont. If you were a handbag, what type would you be? All jokes aside, though, your humor is relatable to such a wide audience, and you make it look easy. Amy Schumer Thank you! I would say it’s helpful to understand you aren’t going to be perfect at everything right away. You have to work really hard to get great at something. And you have to help out your friends and ask them for help too. Also, love yourself like your own mother, and live in a way you can be proud of. Too much?

Hi Amy! As a 17-year-old girl, I struggle a lot with my confidence and how I look. Do you have any advice for being confident and happy with your body? I absolutely loved your book! :)

Amy Schumer Every single person is insecure-- even supermodels. Look at yourself in the mirror and smile at yourself and mean it. I do it every day, and in my head I say “You can work with this, bitch!” How we look doesn’t make us who we are. Be proud of everything about who you are and don’t waste time worrying about looks. Let everyone else do that.
