Renaissance Spook sprang from the feeling I had, after being laid off for the second time in as many years, that I was better off dead to my family than I was alive. It was a very "It's a Wonderful Life" moment, and there is a nod to that in the book. The plot of Renaissance Spook is far removed from any book or movie with which I'm familiar though, so if you noticed any similarity between Renaissance Spook and something else, well, that definitely wasn't intentional.

I usually just wait for it to pass. If that doesn't work, a dark room, late at night, with either Groove Salad (on SomaFM) or Chill (on SiriusXM) in the background tends to help.
