Just write down whatever nonsense is in my head. It can be chopped out later.

Playing make pretend for a living, and being able to have an excuse to talk to yourself. I also enjoy meeting interesting people and being able to work in bed.

WRITE! Don't let anybody discourage you from putting your story down on paper. Don't let nay-sayers, inside or out, slow you down. But DO seek out constructive criticism from people who know what they're talking about, and LOVE YOUR EDITOR. Nobody is perfect no matter how long they've been writing.
Worship Hemingway's "Sh*tty First Draft." Just get the story down. You can and will go back and rewrite later.
Nothing is off the table when it comes to making your story better. William Faulkner said, "Kill your darlings." Be willing to let some of your favorite passages, even entire subplots, go.

I'm working on my FIRST contemporary, called HEAT STROKE, the story of a CEO and a writer at odds over the value of art, and the treatment of rich art "patrons" vs. the artists themselves and "normal" people who really support them.
This was originally written for Harlequin Desire.

I can't wait to get inspired -- even if I'm feeling UNinspired, I have to write something every day. Especially if I'm under a deadline. When my health is really bad and I just can't pull it off, I at least hand write in my journal.

It really depends on the book, but most often it is a basic idea of the plot and a character or characters. In my current novel, my heroine is inspired by a mix between the incredibly sexy Christina Hendricks (Firefly, Mad Men) and the wildly copper-haired Merida of Brave fame (Her spirit and sometimes not-great judgement)!
