I got the idea for THE OBVIOUS GAME from blogging about my pasts experiences with eating disorders. I realized from talking to people and reading comments on my work that people who don't have eating disorders really do not get them at all, and they're getting all their information from pop culture and Dr. Phil. That is no good. I wrote my novel to explain the psyche of anorexia and a possible path in and out of it. I also wanted to write about mother/daughter relationships that don't suck.

Learn to divorce criticism of your writing with criticism of your being as early as possible in your writing career. They are different things. Your writing is something that can be adjusted without changing who you are as a person. If you're having trouble accepting criticism without feeling like a failure or getting defensive, read TRYING TO SAVE PIGGY SNEED by John Irving.
