One by One was inspired by an evening where I got incredibly angry watching a film that shall remain nameless. I like a good revenge story but midway through the film it was revealed that the hero was ex'special forces etc. and I thought it would be nice, if for once, the hero was just as unbalanced as the villains.

Little things.
A small chat with my friend could open up an idea in my mind, then I spend days obsessively building and building it, fleshing it out. I note down little scenes, idea's, potential storyline's.
One of the deaths in One by One was inspired by simply visiting a batting cage. A fight scene was inspired by walking past a fire escape.
It's hard to know where inspiration is drawn from but it's wonderful when it arrives.

I am currently finishing the planning for the first in what will (hopefully) be an ongoing series around an agent working for a secret organisation that deals with the paranormal. All I will divulge is that the book has a prospective title of 'Doorways' and the main character is called Franklyn 'Bermuda' Jones.

Be prepared to put the work in. I mean it. Sitting down and thinking you will become a writer overnight will never happen. All the processes are fun but they are lengthy. The planning, the writing, the editing and the endless promoting. But all I can say is it is so worth it!
Also, believe in yourself. As cliche as that may sound, it is true. Believe in your idea, in your characters, in your ability to write. Without it, the story will fall apart.

There are two things that I have absolutely loved:
1. Being in control of every aspect of the story. How many times have you read or watched something and thought it should have been done differently? Being able to build characters, their backgrounds and motives, being able to write out fight scenes and dialogue. It's enthralling!
2. Being told by someone that your book has reignited their passion for reading. One of the nicest things I have ever heard.

I embrace it. The worst thing to do is to force yourself to write. I went through a month period of not writing once and as infuriating as it was, it was the best thing to do. Writing without the want to is pointless and it shows in what gets put to paper.
