Hi Juliette, thanks for the question...I write characters that are affected by the story line if that makes sense? I love to put my characters into situations where I know they will be deeply uncomfortable and then try to react on their behalf based on their particular psychological make-up. In that way, I as the writer insulate myself against the story becoming too personal...however, craziness is in-built!

Ideas are difficult to pin down - I write a plan for a book, then write the first chapter or two and then abandon the plan to inspiration! My books develop from the characters that I create....I think about how that particular character might react to a particular circumstance and the idea snowballs...

Truthfully, I write a great deal from the back benches in coffee shops...I love watching people interact - how they make an effort to offer the smallest touch or a knowing glance...or a full scale argument! People let their guard down in a coffee shop - I put it down to the abundance of sofas....

Be yourself...writing courses, etc are brilliant - but they do tend to make writers 'sound' a bit samey...express yourself in the way you feel is right for you...hopefully readers will enjoy the freshness of your particular narrative..
