Timothy Freriks The idea for Startup Assembly Manual came from my desire to help aspiring entrepreneurs avoid the stupid things I did in my 40 years of building businesses and think about what leads to success. I got tired of talking about the same things over and over, so I started writing it down.
Timothy Freriks It's like a can of soda that's being shaken gently. Eventually, the top pops off and the fizz runs out. I guess I just let my mind shake the soda.
Timothy Freriks I try to help entrepreneurs understand how to "pitch" their product and opportunity. Inexperienced angel investors often need to understand how to "catch" them. That book is rolling around in my head.
Timothy Freriks The best advice came from my grandfather, who said "it's easy to keep it all straight - just be honest." I've known liars who get easily caught up in stories they invent and can't keep details straight; the story gets lost. Write about something you really have a passion for and understand. Look at the big picture and break it down to concise and sequential bits.
Timothy Freriks The best thing about being a writer is that I can organize all the thoughts I have in my head in a manner that will be there tomorrow to review. Writing helps unscramble and consolidate my thoughts, too. When I'm done, it's either valuable to someone else (which is good) or valuable just to me (which is OK) or not valuable to anyone (which is a bummer). The first option is most satisfying and it happens from time to time.
Timothy Freriks I really don't get writer's block. It might be weird, but I just sit down and write. I've trained myself to start writing when I get a keyboard on my fingers. If it's good, I'll keep it. If not, at least I wrote something.
