PRISCILLAS HOMECOMING came from an Oprah Winfrey show! She actually interviewed Edward Ball who wrote SLAVES IN THE FAMILY. I thought the story behind one of the children in his ancestor's ledger was so intriguing I wanted to introduce her experience to young readers without dwelling on the horrors of her life. The survival of this child is remarkable!

Inspiration varies for me. It can come through something I've read, saw, or even experienced. It can also be situational like watching a sunrise or enjoying an evening with loved ones. For me it always stems from a positive encounter.

My goal is to have both my stories easily accessible to a wide range of young audiences. Both books highlight overcoming personal obstacles through positive persistence. These are principals that should be instilled in young people to build self confidence. I'm also currently working on another children's book with a male protagonist.

I usually just walk away and take a mental break. It might take a few days to clear my head but it's important to do because you don't want to be stressed out during the writing process. The thought process has to be smooth in order to transfer that onto the page.
