Amita Trasi Hi Su, Thank you! I'm glad you liked the book and I'm happy Mukta and Tara's journey could shed some light on the brutal world of human trafficking. To answer your question, I would say in certain areas of India, human traffickers still exploit villagers' need for money and their belief to continue with the devadasi practice, but a lot of NGOs are now making a significant impact in trying to impede the efforts of human traffickers. Here is an interesting article which talks about the issue :https://scroll.in/article/852319/is-t...
Thanks for your question and for reaching out! I appreciate the kind words.
Amita Trasi Hi Linda, Thanks for reaching out! I'm so glad you enjoyed this book! I would say, as of now, I haven't thought of writing a sequel to The Color of Our Sky. I'm currently working on another book, which also has to do with social issues in India. I wanted to keep the ending of this novel open-ended so as to leave my readers hopeful for the lives of Tara and Mukta. Also, writing about child trafficking and stepping into Mukta's shoes was quite an emotional writing experience and I think I would consider writing more about it only if Tara and Mukta have a compelling story going forward, a story that I feel needs to be told. Meanwhile, I hope you will enjoy more of my stories to come and my cats send love to yours! All my best, Amita
Amita Trasi Thanks for reaching out, Divya! I am glad you liked this book. I am writing the next one, and it usually takes about a year (or more!) to reach readers from the time I submit it to the publisher. But I will announce my next book on Facebook page/Goodreads and my newsletter. So if you're following me on one of these, you will definitely know. I appreciate your writing to me!
All my best,
Amita
Amita Trasi Thank you for the kind words, Christine! I'm so glad you enjoyed the book. I'm not really writing a sequel at the moment but well, that's food for thought! Maybe, one day......
All my best,
Amita
Amita Trasi Thank you, Moira! Good to hear from you. I'm glad you're liking this book! Human slavery is one of the unfortunate things happening in the world today. I haven't read 'The Blue Notebook' but it has piqued my interest now that you mention it. I am going to add it to my TBR list. About my next book, I'm still working on it. The idea is in a nascent stage and feels like a large pile of clay I have to sculpt through in order to give it life. :-) Thank you for reaching out!

Always a pleasure to hear from my readers.
Best,
Amita
Amita Trasi Thanks for your question, Zaheerah! With this novel, I started with a basic idea - a friendship between two girls modeled on my own relationship with the daughter of a servant who worked for us in Mumbai. I started writing from their birth in different caste systems (in a village vs. a city) and I wrote detailed scenes with them growing up and retaining their friendship for three decades. The characters took me to where the story is now. I wrote more than 300 pages just to get to know my characters. Once I knew my characters well enough, and knew the story I wanted to tell, I got rid of more than half the writing, and reworked through many drafts to start the novel at critical points in each character’s life.
As far as possible, I like to keep my characters very human because we all struggle with complex emotions at some point in our lives which often influences the path we take...
