I read other people's work. I'm a member of Online Writing Workshop, which is a great place to read other burgeoning authors and edit their drafts. It has been enormously helpful to my own writing and it can almost always be counted on to get my creative juices flowing.

I was an aspiring writer for over a decade before I figured out what I need to write.
1. Determination - the willingness to surrender other things in my life for writing.
AND
2. Coffee shops.
I do 98% of my writing in coffee shops on Saturday and Sunday mornings. I struggle to write anywhere else or at any other time.
So my advice is to experiment. Write in different places at different times. Find what works for you. Then do that, a lot. Do it relentlessly. Don't let anything get between you and that perfect writing environment.

I'm wrapping up the sequel to my first novel, Wings of the Sathakos, and I've written a few chapters of a new book set in an entirely different fantasy world.

Sometimes inspiration strikes me and I can't wait to get to a computer to start writing. Most of the time, however, inspiration is something I have to draw out. Like blood. It's uncomfortable and difficult but nothing gets done if I don't make it happen.
I'm fortunate that I'm generally driven to succeed at things when I put my mind to it. I'm ambitious. I don't like to fail. So inspiration is something I need and I'm willing to work to find it.
