A biography of a soul singer, John Turrell of Smoove and Turrell, trying to make it the music world. Big character, big talent, great story. The chances are that we will end up fictionalising it though, to protect the not entirely innocent.

By following the old cliché that "you should start by writing what you know". Having a publisher say very early on in the process that they would publish it did not do any harm either!
I did have some doubts about writing about my own experiences but knew deep down that it was an interesting, unusual and entertaining story. Happily, everyone who has read it so far agrees!

I should say something wholesome like "freedom" or "intellectual stimulation". But really it is having your vanity fed. When someone says that I have written something insightful or funny (ideally both), I get a real kick out of it.

I had always wanted to write and, to some extent, did quite a lot of it in a different way during my career as a diplomat. The ultimate inspiration was my wife telling me that I was good at it, then repeatedly kicking me until I surrendered and agreed to give it a go.

Fortunately, it is not something I have struggled with so far. My biggest problem is finding enough time to write everything that I would like to. I am a bit sceptical about the whole concept really. As a musician friend of mine says, you don't hear much about plumber's block do you? Perhaps, you just have to keep plugging away until the work comes out right.
