Robert Krenzel I stepped into the elevator, pressed the button, and did my best to avoid eye contact with the strange man standing motionless in the other corner. The doors closed, and then the man said, “I’ve been expecting you.”
Robert Krenzel I am intrigued by the world of Sherlock Holmes. It is a time of incredible transition, with the British Empire at its zenith, and the clouds of the Great War beginning to form. And then there is Holmes--an incredibly complex character. I doubt Holmes and I would get along, he'd probably find me tedious, but Watson and I are both Afghanistan veterans, so we'd have something in common!
Robert Krenzel This summer I will be reading "Fatal Sunday" by Mark Edward Lender and Garry Wheeler Stone, about the Battle of Monmouth in 1778.
Robert Krenzel One of the most interesting times of my life was my time as the US Army commander responsible for the Novo Brdo area of Kosovo in 2000. It was a place of hospitable people, breathtaking scenery, heartbreaking poverty, racial tension, political intrigue, and the constant potential for violence. There were probably a dozen separate storylines ongoing at any given time.
Robert Krenzel After long and hard thought, I have to say my favorite fictional couple is Shakespeare's Hamlet and Ophelia. While I suppose they are never technically a "couple" their feelings for each other come through loud and clear, and the tragedy of that play is heightened all the more by her madness and death. In his quest for revenge Hamlet unwittingly destroys his would-be bride, setting him on a path toward his own destruction.
Robert Krenzel I just do something else. Frankly my best ideas come to me when I am mowing the lawn, driving to or from work, or running. The hard part is writing down notes; fortunately I tend to remember those ideas.
Robert Krenzel Having a reader identify with a character, or start reading my work and not be able to put it down. That rocks!
Robert Krenzel Just write! That is half the battle. I started writing "This Glorious Cause" a bit at a time, in the order it came to me, and it morphed a lot over the course of eighteen months. I can't begin to count how many times I edited it until I had a product I liked.
Robert Krenzel I read history. First person accounts are especially helpful. I also have a playlist of Revolutionary War Era tunes: fifes and drums really help me get in the mindset of the times.
Robert Krenzel I am convinced that many of the people we consider heroes are ordinary people who found themselves in extraordinary circumstances and rose to the occasion. I really wanted to explore this concept through the eyes of young adults; the American Revolution provides the perfect backdrop, because by today's standards the participants were in incredibly young, and what they accomplished transformed the world.
Robert Krenzel I am currently working on "Times that Try Men's Souls," Number Two in the Gideon Hawke Series. Before I finished "This Glorious Cause" I knew there would have to be at least one more book in the series. The story of Lexington & Concord and the Siege of Boston is compelling, but the chain of events that began in July 1776 is utterly fascinating!
