Graham Stull I was daydreaming about the idea of overpopulation. What if a virus? What if a trial? What kind of person would it take to do this? And the questions became an idea. And that became a story.
Graham Stull Every story I have ever written begins as a daydream. I daydream when swimming laps in a 25 m pool, when cycling to work, when lying in bed about to go to sleep, when walking through the park. Ever since I was a little boy have I chosen to dwell in the world of fantasy that surges up onto the pages of my stories in odd and unexpected ways.
Graham Stull My current novel, provisionally entitled 'The Fortune Teller', is another political thriller. It takes place in post 9/11 America and explores the confused, horrifying world of civil right violations from the perspective of an Irish illegal immigrant to the United States, and the corporate lawyer turned civil rights activist who defends him.
Graham Stull Write. Then edit. Then edit some more. Then write, edit, write, edit, edit, edit, edit.
Graham Stull Head down and force yourself to plough through. It might not work as a final text, but the motion of writing is what counts.
Graham Stull The best thing about being a writer is the moment you lose control; the moment you are no longer creating the characters and directing them into the action; the moment they start acting of their own accord. The moment you are simply observing them and making a record.
