I write stories that I am involved in -if only an observer. Usually the subject is someone or something I witnessed or interacted with that moves me to make the first scratch on paper.
Last week, when I heard about Linkin Park's Chester's death- I wrote rather furiously for about two hours. We had had a brief encounter backstage at a music event several years ago. My memory was a blip, nothing particularly important, but.....sad in that you don't know whose life you have affected.

Seeing the words develop into something real is very gratifying.
Having people read your work gives such pride and reinforces the fact that the work (TOIL) was all worth it - from the first notes to editing to layout to photo.
