A little of both. I research enough to know what and where the story will generally go, but I'll lose interest if I don't get into the story pretty quickly. Once I start writing, I try to stay in front of the research, but sometimes, depending on the scene and what it demands, I can spend a lot of time studying for that scene. I'll work on the beginning scenes of the story, developing the characters, etc, while studying for the "revelations" later on. Hopefully, by the time I get there, I'm ready to spell it all out. But that depends on how many books and topics are enveloped in that studying. Right now, as I work on Progeny 3, I'm staring at about 18 books that I'm referencing for research, and if anyone has seen the bibliography for Progeny or Solomon Key, they know what I'm talking about:)
