W.B. Belcher Oh, Goodreads. Thanks for the question, which is an interesting one.

My favorite fictional couple is Didi and Gogo (Vladimir and Estragon) in Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot. Ever since I first read the play as a teenager, I've been captivated by the slapstick, the wordplay, and the political / religious interpretation. BUT, more importantly, I'm fascinated by how Beckett created these very tender, intimate moments between Didi and Gogo. That mix of gallows humor, pathos, and tragedy has always appealed to me.

Other contenders include Singer and Spiros in The Heart is a Lonely Hunter (McCullers), Jake and Brett in The Sun Also Rises (Hemingway), and for personal reasons, Set and Grey in The Ancient Child (Momaday).
W.B. Belcher Thanks for the question, Stephen. Goddard has a terrific program and a very talented faculty, who work across many genres, from playwriting to fiction to graphic novels. The faculty and their range of experiences and specialties was important to me -- it opened up my reading habits, helped me take a critical look at my approach to craft, and helped me embrace my process.

As with all low-res programs, be ready to put in the time and do the work. That goes without saying. But it's simple -- the more thought you put into your plan and reading list, the more you'll take away and grow as a writer.

Lastly, in my experience, Goddard does a great job at separating the external pressures so that you can slow down and focus on your individual process and the writing itself.

Hope that helps. My best to you.
