My absolute favorite couple: Jack Aubrey and Stephen Maturin, the two men created by Patrick O'Brian. They became friends in "Master and Commander," and their relationship unfolded over years and 20 novels plus several chapters of the 21rst novel. Their bonds and the twists and turns their relationship takes form the spine of these fabulous stories.
My newest favorite couple: Lila and Elena in Elsa Ferrante's four Neopolitan novels. The lights, the darks, the endurability of friendship yield so much for both writer and reader. Watching, listening to these two women as they go from girlhood to old age held me spellbound.

It doesn't take much. I walk out the door and right away there are people, sounds, smells, animals, plants. It all works on me like a drug. Also: chocolate. I'm in incurable eavesdropper and I scribble down the conversations of others and save them. I find these snippets useful and inspiring in many ways.
