B.J. Sikes It used to be that you had to write and submit your work to publishers and agents for ten years and more and still never get published. Now we can write our work and publish it ourselves. Don't be afraid to just do it. Write what you love, get yourself a professional editor and cover designer and publish your book! Then write another and do it all again!
B.J. Sikes I'm a big fan of plotting so if I can't get the words out, I'll write a character sketch, describe a setting, or fill out a "questionnaire" about my plot. There are lots of great questions online to help develop plot. I find writing about my WIP helps me get into the mode of actually writing.
B.J. Sikes Telling stories! I love telling stories!
B.J. Sikes My current WIP is the story of a girl whose parents move to the Bahamas where they get involved in a secretive cult. Circa alt-1908, at the beginning of the Afro-Caribbean Empire. There will be monsters.
B.J. Sikes I was initially inspired by a nonfiction book about the painter John Singer Sargeant, "Strapless." It's the story of the scandal behind his portrait of Madame X, a famous Parisian socialite of the time. He created a portrait he thought was true to who she was but was criticized for making her look ugly and licentious. It made me think about what beauty means, how it morphs from person to person.
