I moved next door to my best friends, so there was no longer any separation of households; it was all one big happy family. One evening over gin-tonics on one front porch or the other, we kicked around the scenario of a “deaf haven,” a play of words on the title of a book I’d written, Deaf Heaven. This deaf haven would be populated by us as geezers decades hence, future debilities leaving us hard of hearing or otherwise, still living cooperatively, still drinking gin-tonics on the porch.

A better question might be how DON’T I get inspired to write. The urge is always there, and it never takes long to find a focus. Writing inspiration is all around, everywhere, every day. A “big idea” might flash upon me while I’m mowing the lawn, washing the dishes or taking a walk. The only things that impede inspiration, in my opinion, are lack of time or energy.

At present, I’m dealing with the promotional aspects of book publication, and writing grant applications to leverage funds for keeping the utility bills paid and my pets in kibble while I write. I’m also writing essays for a compilation entitled Rei(g)ning Cats and Dogs, which appear serially in the Dayton Leader, as well as doing a global rewrite of my novel Changing Sweaters for NAL Penguin.

Be persistent. Study and learn everything you can about your craft. Be persistent. Be open to constructive criticism; don’t consider your words sacred. Be persistent.

The obvious answer is working at home: doing what you love, working in your PJs, being with your pets, having an office with a view better than the best cubicle, etc. But, truly, the very act of writing, of concocting a meaningful story, enlarges the writer. The only thing better is being read and enriching the lives of readers, too, and helping them realize the power of their own stories.
