I spent so many years observing things I just couldn't quite understand, I was amazed at how people could act. I started writing them all down, and silently (sometimes not so silently) voicing my opinions on those people/situations and found that there were a ton of other people who felt the same way as me; we just didn't know it.

I think the key is to find a subject you are passionate about, something you feel the world is in need of, and more importantly monitor your competition. If you don't have to compete with another book in your genre, the likelihood if it being published are greater.
