I do think that it is very difficult, emotionally, to focus on this topic for a sustained length of time. It's not just horribly sad but, as time goes by and change doesn't come, it's infuriating. As with other tough topics that feel intractable - climate change comes to mind - it is very human to turn away. My hope is that this story, which focuses on the community after the shooting rather than on the shooting itself, will allow us to approach the topic without being overwhelmed.

I think that the hardest part of a debut novel has to be bringing it to someone's attention. I was very fortunate to meet and partner with an agent early in the process, and he helped to develop the manuscript as well as to bring it to a publisher. Writers (myself included) are often introverts, and we have to force ourselves to network and meet new people in order to make those connections.

The idea for Every Moment After came directly out of my reaction to the ongoing violence in our schools. I felt that there was a story that wasn't being told about what happens when the TV crews go away - not just in the weeks and months after, but over the course of years and decades. How do people go on? What do they carry with them? How do their memories get wrapped into the life of the community? This book was an effort to imagine some answers to those questions.
