For my summer list I shall be reading a selection of fiction and non fiction My choices for non fiction are The Pidgeon Tunnel by John Le Carre and as part of my research for my latest Alex Swan Mystery novel Growling over the Ocean Avro Shackleton The Men and the Missions by Deborah Lake. As for my fiction choices The Rose of Tibet by Lionel Davidson, Shadowhunter by Geoffrey Archer, Mysterious Island A Jules Verne classic and I better also read The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo as my students will be studying it for their English syllabus in September

The idea came from my interests in military jet aircraft from 1950s and 60s. One particular plane is the British BAC TSR-2. This was not just a sophisticated warplane but a controversial political hot potato, one in which tragically led to its cancellation. I have been writing aviation related articles for magazines for some time and have always wanted to have a go at fiction. So I thought to myself, why not combine the two. A lot of authors will advise to write what you know a lot about. It helps with the moving off of that first page!

Being able to exercise your mind and take yourself away to periods and places that you may never physically see (unless of course I receive such large figure royalties for my novels).

I find that taking the family out or walking the dogs between writing sessions help with this.
I can then come back to the laptop with fresh eyes and clear mind and get stuck in again.
