Alli Marshall Different things work for me at different times. One of the things that helped with "How to Talk to Rockstars" was writing music reviews, both of albums and live shows. I still often write about music. It's a great way to be creative without any real pressure. Sometimes I like to go to an art museum or gallery and write short stories or poems about the artwork I see. I write every day, anyway, because of my job — staying in practice helps, and so does knowing that I *can* write even when I don't want to.
Alli Marshall I currently have a number of projects in the works — an LGBTQ-friendly YA novel set in the 1980s (that is finished and being shopped to agents); a work of historical fiction set in New Orleans, Charleston, S.C. and Paris in the late 1880s; and a novella.
Alli Marshall I'm an arts and entertainment writer and editor for alternative newsweekly Mountain Xpress in Asheville, N.C. A big part of my job for the past 12 + years has been interviewing touring bands and musicians. The unique experience of those interviews inspired "How to Talk to Rockstars." It's fiction, but actual interview questions are scattered throughout the book, and it's loosely structured around one important interview with a musician.
