Daniel Thompson I think it is probably the God-like ability to create worlds and mold them according to my whims. Writing seems to be a safe outlet for such ambitions. It's as close as I will ever come to omnipotence.

Of course, there is a downside. I often grow attached to my characters. It can be difficult to subject them to the kinds of harrowing experiences that are expected in a good story.

I sometimes wonder, if there is a god, is he is some kind of author? Perhaps the world is a hyper-realistic, multimedia manifestation of a novel with a very complex plot. A good author with the ability to present his ideas in that format would be unlikely to create a world that is pleasant but boring. No. He would want to create a truly novel world (pardon the pun) with dramatic action, poignant humor, touching love scenes, and a good dose of tragedy. It wouldn't be much different than the world in which we live. He might not even realize that his intricate literary creations have attained self-awareness. If so, that would provide at least a partial defense to the accusation that he willfully permits suffering.

There you go. The problem of evil solved. What was your question again? Oh yeah. I also like how being an author gives me an opportunity to engage in philosophical speculations.
