It's not a particularly compelling mystery, but years ago I owned a house that had a weird, dark maroon, kind of blood-coloured stain on the carpet in the living room. For the life of me, I couldn't figure out where it had come from, and it bugged me relentlessly. It sparked the idea for a book about a guy with the same problem -- this stain that he couldn't remember causing -- and how it ate away at him until he gradually began to uncover his memory of a horrible, traumatic event, and then being able to play with that idea of gradually uncovering a horrible thing about yourself.
Never did anything with the story. It's still firmly there though, waiting for an extended burst of inspiration.

The one I'm working on right now, I was inspired by a trip to a hippie-friendly music festival a few years ago. It struck me as a good backdrop for a 1970s-esque horror story, involving crazy wiccan witch people trying to conjure some kind of freaky fertility god, and the ordinary family who stumbles into their midst. So far the writing is slow going, but it's been a fun idea to play with.
