Take time to learn about story structure. I believe in outlining my books. It avoids a lot of wasted effort. Not that I stick to the plan 100%. But it points me in the right direction. Also, when you finish it and want to publish, use a professional content editor, not a friend. It needs to be someone who isn't afraid to hurt your feelings.

I always wanted to write but could never finish anything. When circumstances, (the great recession), forced me into early retirement I finally had the uninterrupted time to write. I was thrilled when I completed my first novel.
