I like Kay Scarpetta and Benton Wesley from Patricia Cornwell's Scarpetta series. Their relationship has gone through a lot and is complicated, often bleeding into their professional lives. They stay grounded in who they are though and that makes it interesting for the reader.

I don't typically get writer's block (I suspect that's because I don't have a set schedule for when I write), but if I do feel like I can't produce anything worth reading then I will step away. Give it some time. I get a lot of ideas when I first wake up so it's just a matter of letting things simmer--even though you may not always be "writing", you can still be working on something. Sometimes you just have to let it cook and then when it's time, it's all there ready for you to just put it down on the page.

It's a built-in (lower cost) therapist! I can work through my problems by writing a short story or a novel or even one page. And often times it helps me to see things differently, in a way that I wouldn't have had I just kept it all bottled up.

To simply write. I write in a journal most every day and have for 20 years. It gets it all out of my head and onto the page and sometimes ideas come from that, but the main thing is to just do it. The writing will improve as time goes on and you get more used to it and you find more time for it.

I have several novels started, but since Kin-Krazy and Salsa with the Pope (both published under pen names) just came out, I am busy doing publicity for those and am getting little time to write at the moment.

Life experiences--my own and those of people I know. Sometimes another book or story in the news will spark something.

An event in my life, though all the happenings and the outcome in the book are pure fiction.
